Is it a good idea to enroll in a summer camp if my child has never climbed before?
Of course! Planet Rock Summer Camps are designed to meet the needs of climbers of all ability levels. Beginning climbers will be introduced to knot-tying, climbing safety and techniques, while more advanced climbers will be challenged with climbing routes on our 5-story tall walls! Our instructors are trained to help support all climbers and help them feel successful throughout the entire week of climbing. In addition to climbing, our Summer Camps offer many other activities for Planet Rock fun: campers get to try out aerial silks, learn how to rappel, practice walking on the slackline, and participate in team building games.

My child has never attended a Planet Rock Summer Camp before. What does a typical camp day look like?

Campers arrive at 9:00am and check-in with our staff. Parents must sign in and out their child every day. Campers begin each day with warm-up exercises, stretching, and a team building activity. If your child is enrolled in a Half-Day camp, mornings are generally spent working on climbing techniques and skills, such as knot tying, foot work, identifying holds and experiencing bouldering and top rope climbing. We break for lunch around 12:00, then play camp-wide games such as Capture the Carabineer or Dodge Ball. The afternoon is spent climbing – bouldering or top rope. Additional games and activities are incorporated throughout the day. Campers are picked up by 2:00pm, or may enroll in Camp Extension (offered select weeks) until 5:00pm.

ABC camps run from 10:00am-1:00pm, but incorporate many of the same daily routines. Campers begin with stretching and team activity, followed by guided climbing instruction. Campers break for lunch around 11:00. Many climbing skills are taught through fun games and activities; campers spend the morning or afternoon in our ABC room, learning how to safely traverse, stem and smear, as well as ride the zipline and play on our specially designed climbing elements for young children.

How do I know which summer camp is right for my child?

Our Summer Camps are divided by age so that everyone can find the right fit for their ability level. ABC Camps are designed for campers 4-7, while Half-Day Camps are for climbers ages 8-15. We are also offering an additional Camp Extension option for Half-Day camps, in case summer camp hours don’t match with your work schedule. All enrollments are made through your Planet Rock account.

Do I need to provide a lunch for my child?

Yes, and we recommend packing a healthy snack too! Climbing is a rigorous activity, and your camper is definitely going to work up an appetite. Planet Rock has a selection of granola bars and drinks available for purchase. An easy option is to purchase a Planet Rock gift card the first day of camp so that your child can purchase snacks throughout the week. Please refrain from sending any items that require heating.

What should my child wear to camp?

The most important thing is for your child to stay comfortable throughout the day. We run, climb, swing and stretch all week long. We recommend shorts that are long enough to reach below the harness straps. Campers must wear socks. We provide climbing shoes for camper use, but your child can also wear closed-toe tennis shoes while they climb. Crocs and hiking sandals are not safe for climbing.

I have no climbing equipment for my child, will it be provided?

Planet Rock provides climbing shoes, helmets, harnesses and all other equipment that your child will need for the entire week of camp. Your child is welcome to bring their own gear, but please label it with your child’s name.

Does my child have to wear a helmet during camp?

We require that all campers wear a helmet during camp hours.  We provide helmets, but if your child has a bicycle helmet they would like to bring from home, they are more than welcome to do so.

Half-Day camp hours don’t work well with my work schedule. Is extended care available?

Yes! Certain Half-Day camps offer extended hours – we call them Camp Extension hours.  Camp Extension is $100 and provided from 2-5pm each day of camp. Camp Extension is NOT offered after ABC Camps, only Half-Day Camps. You must register for Camp Extension in advance as an additional enrollment to your Half-Day Camp. Something came up in our summer schedule and my child can’t attend camp anymore! Do you offer refunds?

Under certain circumstances, Planet Rock does offer refunds or schedule changes for our Summer Camp programs. A 2-week notice is required to cancel camp registration, and a $45 fee is applied to the cancellation. Cancellations made with less than 2 weeks notice cannot be refunded. If you just want to change camp dates, there is a $25 fee applied. If you have questions about your summer camp enrollments, please contact our Enrollment Director.

I am a gym member. Can I come and climb while my child is in camp?

You certainly can! Both gym locations offer summer hours to regular climbers during camps. Check our website for the most current hours for Ann Arbor and Madison Heights.

How do I enroll more than one child in a summer camp program?
If you want to enroll more than one child, they have to be enrolled separately. Call either gym location and we can enroll your children right over the phone! If you would like to register online, make sure to register each of your children as a separate action – if you just “add” another child, your Planet Rock account doesn’t recognize it as a different enrollment. Crazy, right?!? You know things are A-OK when you get a confirmation email for EACH child you register. We are willing and available to help you out with this process – visit us at the front desk or give us a call!
