Planet Rock FAQ

I climb at another gym. What do I need to start climbing at Planet Rock?
Come on in! You will need to fill out a digital waiver and can purchase a Day Pass, which costs around $17. You also need to take a belay check test ($3) and can rent any gear you might need.

What are your hours?

Planet Rock gyms are open 7 days a week. Hours differ between the two gym locations, so always make sure you check our website before visiting. You can check our current hours and schedule. In addition to regular hours, both gyms offer early and late night climbing on certain days of the week, so you are sure to find a climbing time that fits your schedule.

How much does it cost to climb?

That depends on what kind of climbing you do. If you have never climbed before you are going to need to purchase our Starter Package. Cost is $44 and includes everything you need to climbing – starter lesson, complete gear rental, shoes, day pass to the gym PLUS one additional day pass to use within 30 days. Additional options are also available for adults with children.

If you are already know how to safely belay and climb, you can purchase a gym Day Pass for $17, with discounts available for kids under the age of 14, students and military personnel. You can also rent gear by individual item such as shoes, harness, chalk bag and belay device.

If you just need a quick belay check (maybe you haven’t climbed in a while or you climb at another gym out of state) Planet Rock instructors will happily test your knot tying and check your belay technique skills any time for a small fee of $3.

What age does my child have to be to participate?

The minimum age to climb is 5 years old, but if your child wants to participate in an ABC program, they can be as young as 4. We have special 5-point harnesses specifically designed to keep little climbers safe on the wall. The most important things to consider are the abilities of your child to listen to directions, be aware of their surroundings (we don’t want anyone getting squished beneath a climber) and general fitness capability. If you have a child that loves to climb trees, on a jungle gym or monkey bars, Planet Rock will probably be a great place for them.

All minors must be accompanied and supervised during their entire visit at Planet Rock. While staff does watch the floor and climbing areas, we are not responsible to watching or providing any form of childcare while you and your family are at the gym. Children left unattended are at your own risk.

Is there a weight limit to climb?
Nope. Climbing is for all shapes and sizes. Our routes are set to varying abilities, from beginner to advanced.

What about my membership if I get injured?

We understand that injuries happen. If you are a gym member and you get injured, you can definitely put your membership on hold. Memberships can only be put on hold if you are injured, and we need to see a doctor’s note (just like school) regarding your injury.  Memberships can be put on hold up to one month, and can only be put on hold one time a year. You can read more in our Membership Terms of Use Policy.

What is lead climbing? Can I do it?

There are a couple different types of climbing. Bouldering is done on low routes without the use of ropes or a belayer. Top roping is done on the taller walls, where the climber is tied in and their belayer is managing the rope. Top rope routes have a rope set above the route. Lead climbing is a style of climbing where the rope is NOT set above the route. Lead climbers bring the rope up the route with them as they climb, “clipping in” to the carabiners as they go. A belay partner is needed for lead climbing.

Lead climbing is for experienced climbers only. Planet Rock offers lead lessons on a regular basis so you can take your climbing to the next level. If you are climbing solid 10c/d routes, it might be time to learn how to lead!

What other programs does the gym offer?

Planet Rock strives to bring you classes that will elevate your climbing practices. Increased flexibility, strength and body awareness all translate to a better climbing experience. We have a number of programs that will benefit climbers of all ability levels who are looking to advance their climbing skills. We currently offer Climbing 101, Yoga 101 and Aerial Silks 101. All 101 classes are free with a gym membership or purchased gym day pass. Each class is one hour in duration. Come to climb and stay for a class!

Can I bring a group anytime?

If your group is larger than 10 people, we recommend calling ahead to make a reservation. Planet Rock is available to host a variety of events, such as birthday parties, bachelorette parties, school groups, scout troops and corporate events. We plan and facilitate groups/parties for all ages and budgets, offering a variety of options to best fit your groups’ needs. All groups, including private groups and parties that take place during business hours, can be arranged through our group coordinators. Call our group coordinators in Ann Arbor (734.827.2680) or Madison Heights (248.397.8354).

Do you offer gift cards?

Yes! You can purchase gift cards in any amount you want. (And they never expire!) You can purchase gift cards in person at either gym location, over the phone or online. Planet Rock gift cards can be used to purchase: items in our pro shop, class or program registration, or go towards a monthly/annual gym pass.
