You have questions? We have answers!
It’s my first time at Planet Rock, how do I get started?
We are super excited to have you climb with us! If you have never climbed before, you will need to go through our Starter Package lesson so you can learn how to tie knots, how to climb safely, and how to belay (hold the ropes). Only climbers 14 and older can learn how to belay in the gym, but kids 8-13 can participate in the first 15 minutes of the lesson to learn about knots and gym safety. The lesson takes about one hour and is given on a first-come first-serve basis. No appointment is necessary. Lessons stop 2.5 hours before closing, so make sure you give yourself enough time to climb!
In addition to our tope rope climbing, you can also boulder (shorter routes that don’t use ropes) and use the auto-belays. Our state-of-the-art automatic belay systems mean that you don’t need a partner to climb. We have tons of routes set for top roping, bouldering, and auto-belays, so you can find the perfect climb no matter what your ability level.
We rent all the gear and equipment you need to climb: chalk bag, belay device, harness and shoes. If you purchase one of our Starter Packages, all of your gear is included. You can also rent each item separately in case you need only one or two items.
What clothes should I wear?
Make sure you wear loose fitting clothing that you feel comfortable moving around in. Your clothes will need to fit under a snug harness. If you have long hair, its best to tie it back. We have rock climbing shoes for rent, but if you are more comfortable wearing your own shoes, tennis shoes will work to climb in. (Rock climbing shoes are recommended because they help maintain close contact between your feet and the wall.)
How do I fill out the digital waiver?
Everyone entering the Planet Rock facility needs to fill out a waiver online. Adults 18 and older can sign their own waiver. Climbers under the age of 18 will need a legal guardian to complete the online waiver form.
Do I need to bring a partner to climb?
There are two types of climbing: top rope and bouldering. Rope climbing requires a partner to belay for you when you climb. We also have a range of automatic belay systems. Auto belays are wall routes that do not require a belayer. You are hooked into a pulley system that retracts as you climb. Bouldering is also a type of climbing that does not require a partner. Done on shorter walls, climbers do not need to wear a harness or hook into any ropes in order to boulder.
What type of climbing do you have?
At any given time, Planet Rock has around 80 top rope routes, 60 bouldering problems and 50 lead climbing routes. Our routes are constantly changing in order to offer you the best selection and variation possible.
Is there somewhere to put personal belongings?
You betcha. We have numerous shelves and lockers that you can use to store your stuff. We don’t rent locks, so if you are interested in securing your stuff in a locker, remember to bring your own.
Can I bring my own snacks?
You are welcome to bring your own food and drinks. We have tables and chairs in the gym for you to use at your leisure. A variety of snacks, cookies, protein bars and drinks are available for purchase. Planet Rock also features a full coffee bar with premium brews.
