Planet Rock is all about climbing. Our classes and instructional clinics are designed to elevate your climbing experience by improving technique, strength, knowledge and flexibility. Classes fit a wide range of climbing levels and abilities; learn the basics of rock climbing, including belaying and technique or progress into more advanced skills such as anchor building, multi-pitch and transitioning to climbing outdoors. Participants must have already gone through a Starter Package lesson and know how to belay prior to taking this class. Climbing 101 is a great review for current climbers and a great introduction for beginning climbers ages 14 and older. Classes cover techniques for effective foot/hand placement as well as identifying different types of holds. If you are newer to climbing or are at a 5.6-5.8 level, this is a great class for you.


CRACK CLIMBING 101 – session full

Become a proficient crack climber by learning the basics of hand jamming, how to make tape gloves and how to climb hand cracks efficiently. Instructor Bri Kinney helps you build a strong foundation by perfecting your crack climbing technique.

• ANCHOR BUILDING THEORY
MADISON HEIGHTS: Saturday, MAY 11  |  9:00am-12:00  |  $50 session full

Learn the theory and basic skills needed to construct top rope and multi-pitch anchors using installed bolt hangers or trees. Hands-on instruction tying knots, identifying carabiners and setting several types of anchors. Ages 16+
This class is for climbers: top rope and lead check completed, leading 5.10s or above, comfortable using a tube belay device (ATC).

• GYM TO CRAG

Comprehensive hands-on overview of the basic skills needed to climb safely on outdoor simple pre-bolted single-pitch sport routes. Learn techniques such as managing gear, setting up a climb, cleaning a route, as well as outdoor climbing etiquette and environmental stewardship practices.
This class is for climbers: top rope and lead check completed, leading 5.10s or above, comfortable using a tube belay device (ATC).
This class requires the following gear: personal anchor system, at least three locking carabiners. If you have questions, please ask our front-desk staff. We would be happy to assist you!

• MULTI PITCH
MADISON HEIGHTS:  Saturday, JUN 8 |  8:00am-12:00  |  $75
Learn and practice the skills needed to climb efficiently and safely on multi-pitch outdoor sport terrain. Experienced instructors cover topics such as command systems, belay + rope management, fall factors, belay styles and outdoor etiquette. Participants must be comfortable leading 5.10+ and using a tube belay device. All participants must be lead-checked and have completed an anchor building course with Planet Rock.
This class requires the following gear: harness and shoes, personal anchor tools, guide-capable tube belay device, 20ft webbing sling or cordalette, 6+ extra locking carabiners. If you have questions, please ask our front desk staff. We would be happy to assist you!

• ASCENDING/RAPPELLING
MADISON HEIGHTS:  Thursday, JUN 13 |  6:00-8:00pm  |  $50
Hands-on training in the techniques/skills needed to safely ascend and rappel outdoors. Instructors provide an overview of basic equipment, knots & their application, plus opportunities to ascend/rappel from the rap deck.
This class is for climbers: top rope and belay check completed.


LEAD LESSONS
Learn the fundamentals of both lead climbing and lead belaying; 1 day for the initial lesson, 1 day for a lead-check the next time you climb.  Instructors cover use of climbing equipment, safety commands, correct methods for lead belaying, proper clipping, rope management and how to catch lead falls.
This class is for climbers: regularly rope climbing 8 months or longer, climbing multiple routes 5.10+ in succession, comfortable using a Sticht plate (ATC) belay device. Day 1 of lesson consists of a 3-hour class. Day 2 requires a 30 min lead “check”, which takes place on your next visit to the gym.
