Planet Rock is all about climbing. Our classes and instructional clinics are designed to elevate your climbing experience by improving technique, strength, knowledge and flexibility. Classes fit a wide range of climbing levels and abilities; learn the basics of rock climbing, including belaying and technique.or progress into more advanced skills such as anchor building, technique and transitioning to climbing outdoors. Participants must have already gone through a Starter Package lesson and know how to belay prior to taking this class. Climbing 101 is a great review for current climbers and a great introduction for beginning climbers ages 14 and older. Stretches are designed with climbers in mind, highlighting areas in the shoulders, hips, obliques and hands. Classes cover techniques for effective foot/hand placement as well as identifying different types of holds. If you are newer to climbing or are at a 5.6-5.8 level, this is a great class for you. All Climbing 101 classes are free with a gym membership or purchased gym day pass.
CRACK CLIMBING 101 – new date!

Instructor Bri Kinney helps build a strong foundation by perfecting your crack climbing technique! Become a proficient crack climber by learning the basics of hand jamming, how to make tape gloves, and how to climb hand cracks efficiently.
Participants must know how to belay prior to class and have passed a belay check at Planet Rock.
ICE CLIMBING 101
MADISON HEIGHTS: Thursday, FEB 28 | 6:00-8:00pm | free with membership or day pass
Learn techniques for smooth and natural ice climbing movements, how to best use tools and crampons, as well as methods for climbing and belaying on ice. Try out your new-found skills while climbing the telephone poles and special dry-tooling routes! All Ice Climbing 101 classes are free with a gym membership or purchased gym day pass.
Participants must know how to belay prior to class and be able to climb 5.9 (or above) routes.
CLIMBING CLINICS & INSTRUCTION
Every month, Planet Rock offers classes and instructional clinics focused on more specific climbing practices. Refer to this section for class information, dates/times and class availability.
MADISON HEIGHTS: Saturday, FEB 9 | 8:00am-12:00 | $75
Learn and practice the skills needed to climb efficiently and safely on multi-pitch sport terrain. Experienced instructors cover topics such as command systems, belay and rope management, fall factors, belay styles and more. Participants must be comfortable leading 5.10+ and using a tube belay device. All participants must be lead-certified and have completed an anchor building course with Planet Rock.
This class requires the following gear: harness and shoes, personal anchor tools, guide-capable tube belay device, 20ft webbing sling or cordalette, 6+ extra locking carabiners. If you have questions, please ask our front-desk staff. We would be happy to assist you!

Hands-on training of the techniques/skills needed to safely ascend and rappel outdoors. Instructors provide an overview of basic equipment, knots & their application, plus opportunities to ascend/rappel from the rap deck.

Learn the theory and basic skills needed to construct top rope and multi-pitch anchors using installed bolt hangers or trees. Hands-on instruction tying knots, identifying carabiners and setting several types of anchors. Ages 16+
This class is for climbers: top rope and lead check completed, leading 5.10s or above, comfortable using a tube belay device (ATC).

Are you climbing 5.10s comfortably and are lead-belay certified? Ever think about climbing outdoors? This is the perfect time to learn (or refresh) with professional training on skills needed to climb outside. Our Gym to Crag class is an overview of what you need to know to climb safely on simple pre-bolted single-pitch sport routes.

Planet Rock lead classes will teach you everything you need to know about lead climbing and lead belaying. Lead lessons take 2 days to complete; 1 day for the lesson, 1 day for a lead-check the next time you climb.
